Electricity and magnetism both are caused by fundamental particles in atoms called electrons.  They are tiny spherical particles which rotate at super high speeds.  When charged particles rotate, magnetic field results in which is either in one direction of in the other.  So only two types of magnetic effect are possible.  That is only two types of magnetic poles are possible.

We can build a magnet with  4 poles or 6 poles in that, half of them will be of type North and half of them will be of type south.

The naming convention North and South is given to them because of sailors on seas, who used them to find directions related to Earth's North and South.
