why are thermal power plants are kept near oil or coal field

gauravtomar14: Around 75–80 percent of the generation cost is fuel cost (more importantly coal than oil). More the generation cost more will be the per unit energy cost the end user will have to pay. Certainly company which provides energy at less per unit cost will be preferred as it is an open market. The fuel cost comprises the actual material plus transportation cost. Thus in order to save the fuel cost most of the thermal power stations are preferably put near to coal fields.
