Why are tv celebrities given so much importance in our society?

Suppose two posts appear on the Facebook news feed :
1.) A picture of Zooey Deschanel (picture below for reference):
2.) An article on semiconductors explaining how researchers have found a solution to overheating of electronics.
Majority of people would 'like' the first picture and think fleetingly: "wow, she's beautiful.". By contrast, very few people on Facebook would like the article and even fewer would bother to read the article, understand the principles involved and put in the effort to realize the magnitude of the contribution. The few who do, work in that area or are highly passionate about the matter.
