they are very far from us
when they enter the earth atmosphere the get refracted
this gives a twinkling effect

Its due to atmospheric refraction . The regularly changes in atmosphere refracts the light from the stars by different amounts from to the next nd it reaches to our eyes by increase nd decrease of atmospheric refraction.
