Main function of valve is to prevent back flow of blood. This is because blood pressure in veins is very low (compared to arteries). There is no need of valves in the arteries because the blood pressure usually varies between 70-110 mm Hg.

Valves are absent in the lumen of the artery due to the following reasons:

  • After being pumped by the heart, blood in the arteries is at a far higher pressure than blood in the veins. Therefore, arteries do not require valves to stop backflow.
  • There is a risk of backflow if the valves are absent since blood in veins is at a considerably lower pressure as it returns from the various organs to the heart.

Hence, valves are absent in the lumen of the artery.
