why are western ghats called a water divide​

The Western Ghats or Sahyadri forms the upper edge/highest boundary line of many peninsular & Konkan rivers. In fact it divides the basins of the east flowing peninsular rivers from those of Konkan & Malabar rivers(which are west flowing).Hence it is a major water divide of the peninsular India
