In any atom, normally no. of protons are equal to the no. of electrons.

Proton carries a positive(+) charge while a electron carries negative (-) charge. As they both are equal in no. and are of opposite charges ( one positive, one negative), the atom is balanced and said to be nutral.

But when a atom gains or loses an electron the atom becomes an negative ion (anion - electrons > protons) or a positive ion ( cation - protons > electrons)
