The name signifies Bangalore as a hub for information technology companies in India. It is a reference to the original Silicon Valley of the San Francisco Bay Area, which is the major hub for information technology companies in the United States.

Bangalore is situated atop the Mysore Plateau.

It became an IT hub during the 1980s and soon became the IT leader in India.

Within the United States, Silicon Valley is the major IT hub for technological companies.

In India, Bangalore is the most important place for IT companies as they have their head offices in the city.

Therefore, Bangalore is known as the Silicon Valley of India.

The term was first coined during the 1980s when there was a need to transform Bangalore into an IT hub.

It was done under the leadership of RK Baliga who was a visionary of his time.

He also devised the concept of Electronic City, that is presently there on Hosur Road.

There are many IT companies in the city, including the biggest ones in India, Infosys and Wipro apart from Tata Consultancy Services, HCL, etc.

Many major multinational IT companies are also present here like Texas Instruments, IBM, Oracle, SAP Labs, etc.
