Why black soil is known as moisture retentive soil?

Because of their high clay content, the black soil has wide crack during summers but they are resistant to wind and water erosion. They are highly moisture-retentive. This retention of moisture makes sure that the crop gets water for a long time without irrigation or rains.

Retention is defined as the ability to hold or retain water  strongly related to particle is size.

  • The black soil is made of fine particle known as clay. These clayey material has very good capacity to hold moisture.
  • Black soil  not only have water retaining capacity but also they are rich in soil nutrients such as magnesium, potash, lime etc.
  • Clay particles are so fine and tiny , and porous (small pores) which enables water to move slowly and retain it for longer duration.
  • On contrast sandy soil have least water retentive capacity.
