The blood is a fluid connective tissue, that helps in the transportation of various substances- gases, nutrients, wastes etc. from one to other part of the body.

The blood includes:

  1. Blood plasma: It is the fluid, in which all substances other than oxygen dissolve to be transported.
  2. Red Blood Cells (RBCs): They are red in colour and carry oxygen from lungs to all parts of the body via heart. They contain a red pigment called haemoglobin, which is the carrier of oxygen.
  3. White Blood Cells (WBCs): They help in defence against pathogens.
  4. Platelets: They help in blood clotting in case of any leakage that develops in the blood circulatory system due to any injury etc.

The blood has many constituents discussed above but its colour is red because of a large number of RBCs, that contain a red pigment- haemoglobin.
