A Double Decomposition Reaction pertains to the exchange of ions between two compounds.

Let's consider one precipitation reactions

  • AgNO _{3} (aq)+NaCl(aq)→AgCl(s)+NaNO _{3}(aq)
  • This reaction involves the exchange of ions between the two compounds which are silver nitrate and sodium chloride. Therefore it is a double decomposition reaction.

Now let's consider one neutralisation reaction:

  • NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H _{2}O \: (HOH)
  • This reaction also pertains to the exchange of ions between the two compounds, sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid (consider water as hydrogen and hydroxide ion). Therefore it is also a double decomposition reaction.

Hence, with the illustration, we can say that both precipitation and neutralisation reactions can also be considered double decomposition reactions.
