why bridge pillars are constructed in cuboidal or cylindrical in shape?

This is why in ancient and medieval structures, you would find circular columns everywhere.

But contrary to what Deepoo has said, in today's actual practice, while construction, the following is the preference;

Rectangular c/s or Shear walls > Square c/s > Round c/s

There are some logical reasons to it.

1. It is way much more easier to construct and cast rectangular or square columns than circular ones. This is primarily for the ease of working with the shuttering (the cast prepared to pour concrete) and to support it from it collapsing due to pressure while the concrete is still in flow-able form. The square and rectangular ones eventually are way easier and less costlier to cast.
