Why britishers wants to conquered punjab and not succed in get it during ranjit singh rule?

Britishers wanted to conquered Punjab because...

1 Punjab was going to developed it's own army and defence system..

2 It was surrounded by five Rivers which would served as best transporter route to trade...

3 Punjab was a reputed state of that time..

But Britishers didn't succeed in this during Ranjit Singh 's rule because...

1 Ranjit Singh was very popular leader of that place ..So people supported him fully..

2 Ranjit was a good warrior and leader to deal with British...
