Farmer A claims a piece of land. Farmer B also claims it. Government allows this dispute to be solved without war between Farmers A and B and their friends.

A government allows for collective efforts which are too great or not profitable enough for private enterprise but which serves the common good or security of the nation. Space exploration in the 50s for example. The space race triggered a wave of technological innovations which vastly improved the quality of life in the world. It however took government level cooperation and funding to accomplish. Vaccinations to wipe out smallpox and polio is another example.

The west Indies trading company, Microsoft, the Robber barons, IBM are just a few examples of what happens when a monopoly is established. Such modern monopolies such as the choke hold on our food supply is killing millions and we don’t even understand it now. Cheap Chinese ingredients filled with toxins are poisoning Westerners and Chinese alike. Every once in a while fast acting toxins get into the food supply such as the Purina dog murder spree. Generally they are slower acting toxins and the connection to the Chinese made ingredient will be slow if ever made. We have a government to keep business honest and for the benefit of the people. Corporations are a tool. If we leave them to their own devices or worse empower them such as a monopoly does, then they are amoral entities which can often be used for evil purposes without conscious choice. Bopal for example. Thousands killed. That was not the intent. Saving money was the intent. Corruption, lack of government supervision, profit before morals combined to create that accident. It’s one of thousands over the last 300 years.

A government creates an entity to act as negotiator for large groups of people and represent those people to other groups/nations. Whether it be trade agreements, dispute resolution or just to give voice to concerns, it’s an important function of government.

Generally government should stay out of private lives and as much out of trade as possible. Entering only to prevent unsafe conditions, monopolies or where national interests are involved. For example the use of guest workers in the US is threatening US national security in several ways. Critical threats actually. So it behooves the US government to curtail the use of foreign workers in many areas.

Government is like any other social tool. Used properly a benefit, but also ripe for abuse if not severely limited in scope and purpose. It is essential to a functioning society at this time. Technology may one day make government obsolete, at least as we know it today, but until most individuals carry the kind of power and capability that current governments do, government is a necessary evil.
