We can't hold our breathe long because, circulation of blood is a continues process, during the life-time it never stops. And with the circulation of the blood the transpiration of gases too take place. As soon as we inhale air the oxygen mix with the blood present in the pulmonary vein and transfer to the arteries and as soon as we exhale air we remove the deoxygenated air and this process is continuous so, we can't hold breathe long.
