Why can water striders walk on water but not on oil?

It is not simply the water-air surface tension that allows the insect to walk on water. It isthe combination of the legs not being wettedand the surface tension. ... If the watermolecules were attracted to the molecules of the insect legs and wetted them, the legswould sink into the liquid
