Zinc belongs in upper position as compared to hydrogen in metal activity series.Zinc reacts with dilute hydrochloric acid to give zinc chlrodide and hydrogen gas.

Again zinc reacts with NaOH to give sodium zincate and hydrogen.

In both cases we get hydrogen as gaseous compound. So zinc cannot be used to distinguish between Dil. HCl and NaOH solution.
