Why cant solar energy be used to meet the energy needs of large cities?

Solar Power. ... Solar thermal technologies can be used to concentrate sunlight to heat water and make electricity. Carbon taxes could potentially make it cost effective to use concentrated solar for energy intensive industries like cement manufacturing so that they don't need to burn coal or wastes.
