why carbon exhibits the property of catenation to a great extent?

because they have formed very strong tetravalent covelent bond with other elements

Because due to their electronic configuration they are in need of 4 electrons which helps them in thier property of tetravalency . Due to small electronegativity difference between carbon and hydrogen it helps it to be a covalent bond
