Mass percent of carbon in living organisms is near about 19.4%. This is because carbon is a tetravalent molecule. Due to the presence of 4 electrons in its outermost shell, it has the ability to form covalent bonds with four other atoms at a time. Secondly carbons atomic radius is 70 picometre which allows for easy covalent bond formation without causing steric hinderance. Thus accounting for its ability to form such a large no. of compounds.
