why carbon ,makes only four bonds ?

carbon makes only 4 bonds because it has two electrons in 2p orbitals.and it also has two electrons in 2s orbitals . so 2s and 2p are in the valance shells .so it is said that there are four valence electrons. this way carbon makes only four bonds.
