Carrots are orange because.. At this time, the Dutch were primarily known as carrot farmers. And they grew carrots in the traditional hues of purple, yellow, and white. In the 17th century, a strain of carrot was developed that contained higher amounts of beta carotene -- the first orange carrot.

This is due to the pigmentation present and the colour is given due to the beta-carotene (both alpha and beta) and some carotenoids. They are essential in mineral build-up and also in giving the right body requirements. Because of this the orange colour which is, a great advantage, allowed the deficiency of vitamin A (retinol) to be cleared effectively.

Roopthi: fab pic!
