Casing is a top-dressing applied to the spawn-run compost on which the mushrooms eventually form. Clay-loam field soil, a mixture of peat moss with ground limestone, or reclaimed weathered, spent compost can be used as casing.The casing is needed to provide optimum conditions for fructification to occur and it protects the desiccation of compost surface, fulfills the water requirements of the growing mushroom, provides support to the growing mushrooms and last but not the least promotes fructification.while oyster mushroom does not require casing as it does not require controlled enviornment.
