Why catenation made compulsory to mix ethanol in a fuel?

It enhances the octane contents in the fuel and hence acts as anti-knocking agent. Carbon monoxide emissions are reduced by use of ethanol, and lead (Pb) and other carcinogens (cancer causing agents) are removed from gasoline which are used as alternative anti-knocking agents.
The energy content of ethanol is about 33% less than pure gasoline, although this varies depending on the amount of denaturant that is added to the ethanol. Therefore, vehicle fuel economy may decrease by up to 3.3% when using E10 (Gasoline with 10% ethanol content is referred to as E10).
