as carbon has small size and lose or gain 4 electron it has a strong bond with atoms

its valence shell electronic configuration(2,8,4) is smaller to carbon. however, only seven to eight atoms of the element can be linked by covalent bonds. ... and so this is the reason why no other element exhibits the properties of catenation to the extent seen in carbon compounds!
