Action potentials are caused when different ions cross the neuron membrane. A stimulus first causes sodium channels to open. Because there are many more sodium ions on the outside, and the inside of the neuron is negative relative to the outside, sodium ions rush into the neuron

Hey Friends,
_______________________________
A neuron that emits an action potential, or nerve impulse, is often said to "fire". Action potentials are generated by special types of voltage-gated ion channels embedded in acell's plasma membrane. ... This then causes more channels to open, producing a greater electric current across the cell membrane, and so on.
Hope it's help you!!!!
