South west mansoon from the arabian sea branch is obstructed by western ghats, these winds then climb the slopes of the western ghats , soon they become cool , as a result windward side of sahyadris and western coastal plain receives torrential rainfall. After crossing western ghats these winds descend and get heated up , this reduces humidity in the winds , hence these winds cause little rainfall east of the western ghats (includes Tamil nadu , AP ) , these region can also be called as rain shadow region .

This is a very small illustration of how western ghats affect the entire weather pattern in southern part of Indian peninsula , even small disturbances in the western ghats can have drastic impact on Indian peninsula (some of which can be seen in the destruction caused by floods , aided by the illegal encroachments in western ghats ).
