Chromosomes occurs in pair so that their won’t be any chance of defective daughter cells that arise due to uneven distribution of chromosome. Suppose if they are not present in pair then during anaphase spindle fibre will bring them apart form each other in an uneven fashion. This might lead to uneven distribution and may become fatal to the new daughter cells.
