There are few reasons for that.These are-

1. The clinical thermometer has less range of temperature scale as compared to lab thermometer.And in Lab thermometer,the human temperature does not goes beyond a limit.

2. The clinical thermometer may burn if added in an unknown chemical and may possibly burst because of temperature going beyond the scale.And in lab thermometer,you need to take it away from the object to read the temp,which is difficult in human body.
