Due to smaller size of the cation and greater number of valence electrons, the metallic bonding inalkaline earth metal is stronger as compared to alkali metal. Because of this reason ,these metals are less softthen alkali metals

That is because Alkaline earth metals have smaller sizes of cation and more valence electrons. Thus compounds of alkali earth metal are less ionic than alkali metal.
