Why confession is important in the catholic church?

Catholics believe that any sort of sins committed can spoil the relationship between them and God. We are created for the goodness of a being and when someone commit a sin we deviate from our purpose that we are supposedly created for. It needs to be healed and only God has authority to forgive our sins. Hence, confession is important.
