• In 1956 an act was passed by government which made Sinhala the official language of Sri Lanka
• govt favoured Sinhala speakers for government jobs and admission
• new constitution stated that govt shall protect Buddhism
• these laws made Tamil thaugh that govt is not in their favour
• they felt that govt and major parties doesn't care about their language and culture
• they felt discriminated by government
• Tamils made their own parties and fought for right to equilaty
• they launched strikes to fullfill their demands
• govt denied their demands
• then Tamils demanded for separate country

and hence the civil war started
