Copper when kept open undergoes corroision and a layer of oxide is formed on its surface.
Cu + H20 + CO2 + O2---- CuCO3.Cu(OH)2
Cu + H20 + CO2 + O2---- CuCO3.Cu(OH)2

COPPER TUENS GREEN WHEN KEPT OPEN IN AIR FOR ALONG TIME BECAUSE OF CORROSION. ACTUALLY,COPPER REACTS WHICH OXYGEN IN THE AIR- A CHEMICAL REACTION KNOWN AS OXIDATION AND BECAUSE OF THIS REACTION COPPER CARBONATE (CuCo3) AND COPPER HYDROXIDE (Cu(OH)2) IS FORMED WHICH GIVES GREEN COPPER TO COPPER (KNOWN AS PATINA).
