Why core of electromagnet made of ferromagnetic material?

Ferromagnetic materials have high magnetic permeability compared to air. Ferromagnetic core increases self inductance of the loop proportional to their relative permeability. Due to this reason, coreof an electromagnet is made of ferromagnetic material
