Covalent bonds are formed for making atoms stable by sharing the electrones. Eg carbon. It cannot form C4 + charge by giving its electrones as it require a lot of energy. It cannot form C4 - charge by accepting 4 electrones as it would be difficult to handle 10 electrones by 6 protons.
