In the light reaction of photosynthesis, light energy from the Sun is trapped by chlorophyll and converted to chemical energy in the two forms of ATP and NADPH. Cyclic photophosphorylationproduces only ATP. ... In this process, light causes a pair of electrons to be released from a pair of chlorophyll a molecules.

The electrons combine with H+ and reduce NADP to NADPH2. The hydrogen ions also called protons are made available by splitting up of water. Non-cyclic photophosphorylation needs a constant supply of water molecules. The net result of non-cyclic phosphorylation is the formation of oxygen, NADPH and ATP molecules.
