Why dadabhai naoroji is called the grand old man of india
Answers
Because he lived till the ripe old age of 91 at a time (1917) when the life expectancy of India was around 30 years...;-)
The actual reason is not far from the above claim. For his time, he was the most active member in shaping of the Indian National Congress and also he was the oldest member at his times to have contributed the most for shaping up of Indian Politics.
He was elected thrice as the President of the INC. In his book- The Drain Theory and Poverty he wrote about how India is being exploited of its natural resources in exchange for cheap foreign goods to fill their coffers back home. It brought the stark truth of the drain of wealth into light.
Today many of us Indians see the Indian Railways as a gift given by the British, but the truth is that the Railways were used by the Brits to transport coal and other mined products, spices and cotton from the interior Gangetic plains to the coastal areas( like Mumbai or Kochi) from where they would be shipped to England. Dadabhai showed this hypocrisy in his book- from an economist's perspective.
In 1904, he was the first to demand for an India governed by self- Swaraj and played a key role in the Indian Home Rule Movement which later went on to become the Indian Non-Coperation Movement- when Gandhi took it to the common man , one of the key moments in our Freedom Struggle.
Certainly the oldest man who was active in Indian Politics and in the Indian Independence Movement till his last moments. No wonder he has been awarded this title.
