Diseases are generally classified based on two major factors i.e., duration and cause / reason.  

(i) According to the duration for which a disease lasts it is classified as either, chronic disease (long-term) or acute disease (short term).

(ii) Diseases can also be classified on the basis of cause or reason as hereditary (occurring due to genetic factors in the body itself) or acquired (which occur during the course of life, due to external factors).

(iii) Acquired diseases are further classified into infectious diseases that are easily transmitted between individuals (e.g. common cold and non infectious diseases that are generally not transmitted and occur due to some internal factors in the body itself (e.g. diabetes).
