This is because water stored in dams solve many problems. some are

1.supply water to canals for provision of irrigation to farmers

2.maintain water level in fields and increase them while droughts

3.to generate hydropower that is water generated electricity from the rotational movement if the turbines present.

4.also are used at times of disasters to store the excess water present on the ground.
