The disappearance of forest is called deforestation.

The two main causes of deforestation during colonial period are as followings:-

Land to be improved: demand for food and other commercial crops went up. Forests were cleared and breaked into new lands for cultivation.

Sleepers on tracks: to lay railway lines sleepers were essential to hold the tracks together. For this forest was cleared.
