the structure of diamond is three dimensional and each carbon is bonded 3d to 4 other carbon so bond is strong and rigid

There is no delocolized electrons and it is insulator Graphite on the other hand has each Carbon atom bonded to 3 other Carbon atoms by sp2 bonds, which gives it a planar structure in this rigid network electrons cannot move this explains why diamond is hard
