Diatoms are the major planktons of the fresh and marine waters. They are free-floating or cling onto surfaces of other aquatic animals. Diatoms are photosynthesizing algae that contain chlorophyll.
Diatoms are estimated to produce 25-40% of the oxygen we breathe by organic carbon fixation that converts carbon dioxide and water into sugars in the presence of sunlight, and release oxygen during the process. Diatoms produce long-chain fatty acids and are an important source of energy-rich molecules.
They are the food source of the entire aquatic food web including zooplanktons, aquatic insects, fishes and whales. Hence, they are known as the chief producers of oceans.
