Answer:

Because they perceive the value of success is worth the risk. No criminal ever believes that he’ll be caught. They all have a plan to elude capture.

While in prison and separated from friends, family, lovers, etc, or having to deal with the pressures of loneliness, brutality, and inhumane acts, the “fight or flight” mechanism is strong. Often in custody, “Fight” is not an option. Sometimes, it’s simply a matter of “opportunity”..being included in a group of inmates who are planning to escape custody, and he follows.

Other times, a person reaches a point where he/she can no longer psychologically deal with the present situation, and feels that even if he faces death, it is better than continuation of the current situation.

Inmates have 24 hours a day to… “Think.” They think, contemplate, worry, plan, and depending upon what they hear from loved ones on the outside, they may feel that they MUST get out there to stop the damage, repair a relationship, atone, avenge, revenge, protect, sometime just “be present.” They Think. They Think, and they THINK until their thoughts nearly consume them, and they act out of desperation. They don’t consider getting caught, except in the beginning. After that, comes…the plan.
