Answer:

Birbal (born Mahesh Das; 1528–1586 was appointed by Akbar as a Minister (Mantri) and used to be a Poet and Singer in around 1556–1562. He had a close association with Emperor Akbar and was one of his most important courtiers. He was educated in Hindi, Sanskrit, and Persian, Birbal wrote prose, specialized in music and poetry in the Braj language, thus gaining fame.

It is believed that Akbar bestowed upon him the name 'Birbal' with the title "Raja", by which he was known from then on. Birbal comes from Bir Bar or Vir Var which means “Hazir Jawab” or quick thinker.

Similarly, sangeet Samrat Tansen's real name is Ramtanu Pandey. And it is not Akbar that changed his name from Ramtanu to Tansen but it is Raja Vikramjit of Gwalior who gave him the title “Tansen” as Ramtanu was a court musician in the darbar of Raja Ramachandra of Bandavagarh (Rewa).

When Akbar heard of his prodigious talent, he sent a ‘firman’ to the king asking for Tansen and made him one of the Navaratnas in his court. He gave him the title of ‘Mian’. Tansen is also known as the ‘Sangit Samrat’, according to the Musical Heritage of India by Lalita Ramakrishna.

Akbar gave titles to his Hindu subjects according to their traditions and wisdom.
