The Constitution of India was drafted by the Constituent Assembly. The members of the Constituent Assembly were elected by the provincial assemblies by a single, transferable-vote system of proportional representation. The total membership of the Constituent Assembly was 389.
Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha was the first chairman of Constituent Assembly and later Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president. Jurist B. N. Rau was appointed constitutional adviser to the assembly. The assembly's work had five stages:
Committees presented reports on issues.
B.N. Rau prepared an initial draft based on the reports and his research into the constitutions of other nations.
The drafting committee, chaired by B. R. Ambedkar, presented a detailed draft constitution which was published for public discussion.
The draft constitution was discussed, and amendments proposed and enacted.
The constitution was adopted, with a committee of experts led by the Congress Party (known as the Congress Assembly Party) played a pivotal role.
The Constituent Assembly appointed a total of 23 committees to deal with different tasks of constitution-making. Out of these, eight were major committees and the others were minor committees. Out of those eight major committees, one of the committees was the Drafting Committee, whose chairman was Dr. Ambedkar.
So, no. Dr. Ambedkar was not the only person who created the Constitution. But he did play a very major role. He chaired the committee that prepared the Draft Constitution on which discussions and deliberations were held. So he had a major influence over the document. He oversaw the preparation of the skeleton. He was personally involved in every bit of it.
He was the person who supervised the preparation of the lump of clay. Then he, other artisans and sculptors together shaped into something much more beautiful.....
