The problem is, that “losing” has been so indoctrinated into peoples head because the US didnt have a victory parade down Ho Chi Minh Boulevard in Hanoi.
The US became involved overtly in 1964 after The Gulf of Tonkin incident. Which, btw, one attack did occur. Its the 2nd incident that has always been in question. Regardless, within a few years up to 500,000 US troops would be deployed there.
In 1968, the NVA and Vietcong launched theTet Offensive. That offensive was a collosall military failure. The Vietcong were effectively destroyed as a fighting force and North Vietnam took over full prosecution of the war. However, that was a major political victory. The American public were being told that the war was being won and this took the “wind out of the sails” so to speak. The US begins withdrawing troops.
