Question:

Why did Antonio go to shylock?

ANSWER:

The extract is from the merchant of Venice, Act I , Scene III

Antonio's dearest friend, Bassanio, needed 3000 ducats to go to Belmont to marry Portia. So he asked Antonio to lend the money. But he was neither having money  nor commodity as his ships were abroad. Hence Antonio went to Shylock to borrow the required amount for three months and Antonio will stand security for him.

Antonio neither lends nor borrows upon interest, yet in order to meet the immediate needs of his frind, he was ready to break his usual custom.
