Although the Mauryans won the Kalinga War, both sides suffered heavy casualties. The consequences were great and Ashoka realised the effect of his actions. Soldiers, women and children were thoughtlessly slaughtered. Ashoka then gave up war and looked towards Buddhism, contrary to his grandfather's choice of Jainism. He created the concept of Dhamma and laid down regulations concerning animal slaughter, prisoners of war and religious tolerance.
