When a party called Shiv Sena came into power in Bombay, they thought that the name Bombay was somewhat British. They wanted thier motherland's name to reflect its Maratha heritage, culture and glory. Hence they renamed Bombay as Mumbai in 1995 to pay tribute to thier goddess Mumba Devi.
