Dietrich Brandis was invited to India to introduce forest laws. He introduced them and according them the forests were divided into 3 categories:-
1. Reserved forests
2. Protected forests
3. Village forest.
British declared some of the forests reserved because they felt practises like shifting cultivation , hunting etc are destroying the forests which is a very essential resource during that time. According to this act practised like hunting and poaching are illegal in these forests.

Britishers divided the forests into three categories - reserved, protected and village forests.
The villagers could take things for themselves from protected and village forests but not reserved.
